Introduction
Cat owners know the appeal: a well-made cat piece on the wall, a desk, or a shelf gets noticed every single time someone walks into the room. Cat designs are among the most popular, and they’re some of my favourites to make — the simple silhouettes are forgiving for beginners, and the multi-layered mandala-style pieces are some of the most striking laser-cut work you can produce.
Why cats work so well as laser cutting subjects
A few reasons cats are such a natural fit for this craft:
- The silhouette is iconic. Even a single-layer cut of an arched back or a curled-up sleeping cat reads instantly as “cat.” That makes them ideal beginner projects — minimal detail, maximum recognition.
- They suit layered designs beautifully. The fur patterns, whisker lines, and intricate eye details lend themselves to multi-layer plywood or acrylic work. Mandala-style cats and pop-art faces are particularly striking.
